Ferrari Joy Ride Recovery

Eagle Service Center is a family owned and operated company in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. Owner Paul Woodward started the business in 1989 and his son Paul Jr. runs the auto shop and towing. They both manage to go out on some of their more-involved jobs.

On Oct. 10, 2018, the driver of a Ferrari that had taken the car on a joy ride (with permission from the owner) wound up in a cornfield.

"We were called by the driver at 12:07 p.m. to the area of Little Conestoga Road in the area of Route 345 in Elverson, Pennsylvania, for one vehicle after an accident," Paul Jr. said. "We were advised a Ferrari was stuck in a field after 'the gas pedal and brakes stuck,' and the driver would meet us at the scene. The driver was asked to have the vehicle owner contact us in regard to delivering the vehicle to a repair shop. We immediately dispatched a flatbed truck and a wrecker to the scene."

Two trucks were sent out. Paul Sr. responded in his 2018 Dodge 5500 with a Jerr-Dan flatbed and Paul Jr. in a 2015 Dodge 5500 84" CA with a Jerr-Dan MPL40 8-ton light-duty wrecker.

"Once on scene," Paul Jr. said, "we found a long set of skid marks on the roadway leading to a slight embankment into a cornfield where the Ferrari Testarossa convertible came to a stop. Pennsylvania State Police were already on scene. We immediately met with the state troopers."

Once the troopers finished their investigation, the father and son team were given permission to recover the vehicle and they started rigging.

"We attached soft WreckMaster straps to the vehicle's rear chassis," said Paul Jr. "Our 100-foot synthetic extension cable, 115-foot wire rope and extra lengths of chain were attached to the straps.

"Our Jerr-Dan MPL40 8-ton light-duty wrecker was used to winch the vehicle out the same path as it had traveled in," he said. "After winching the 100 feet, our extension cable was removed. The vehicle was winched another 100 feet to the edge of the roadway."

The Jerr-Dan flatbed was then positioned to load the very expensive Ferrari. The vehicle was then carefully loaded and secured to the flatbed for transportation to Eagle's secure storage facility.

"We transported the driver back to his destination," Paul Jr. said. "The vehicle was stored inside our building overnight, since the top was down. The next morning, the vehicle owner came to inspect the vehicle. Arrangements were made for us to deliver the vehicle to Scuderia Performante in Malvern for repair. The vehicle was transported to the repair facility using our 2013 Hino 258ALP Jerr-Dan flatbed."
