Dump Stuck

0 8eae0by Jim "Buck" Sorrenti

Darrell Johnson Sr. is the owner and driving force of Johnson's Wrecker Services in Orlando, Florida. Darrell, a legend and elder statesman in the towing industry, was one of the founders of the Professional Wrecker Operations of Florida in 1971.

Johnson's varied fleet includes two Century 1075S 75-ton rotators.

On Dec. 7, Johnson's received a call from a dump truck company to recover one of their trucks that was stuck in Wedgefield, Florida. Its driver's side rear wheels were sunk and buried in the sandy dirt driveway.

Johnson's dispatched heavy operator Tom Simpson Jr. who responded in their 2007 Peterbilt/Century 1075S.

Simpson arrived on scene and surveyed the situation.

"The driver was backing around a new house that was being constructed and drove over a septic tank," Simpson said. "The truck fell though the tank."

He moved the Century 1975S into position. He backed to the driver's side of the dump truck and ran the boom up and the cables out and rigged for the lift.

"I put snatch blocks in the lines and put two chains around the frame," Simpson said, "one at the rear of the truck and the other was in front of the rear. I ran the chains out the side of the dump bed. As I winched up, the cables lifted and pulled the truck up and out of the hole."

Tom set the dump down on solid ground and disconnected the rigging and stored it back in the 'tator. With the dump back on its wheels, the driver was able to drive the truck away on its own power.
