Salvage From the Water’s Edge

Bill Parker Jr. and his sons Jimmy and Billy III run Bill's Service of Stamford Inc. The company has been serving the southern Connecticut region for more than 60 years. Bill's grandfather started the towing business in 1950.

"My brother and me grew up in this company, so did my father, uncle and cousins," said Billy III. "It's not just a job; it's our everyday life."

On Oct. 19, Bill's received a call to recover a small sailboat for salvage.

"The boat sank out in Long Island Sound," said Billy III. "The police towed it in to West Beach in Stamford, and the guy hired us to lift it out of the water and put it on land so it could be cut up."

Billy III, Jimmy, cousin Heather Parker and employee Tyler Smith responded with their 2016 Peterbilt 388/Century 1150 50-ton rotator.

When they arrived, they backed the rotator down the boat ramp and staged it for the lift. The crew walked down to survey the situation and saw that the sailboat had a huge hole ripped in its hull.

Jimmy let out both lines from the 'tator, and the crew pulled the lines while walking down to the water's edge where the sailboat was grounded and began to rig with B/A recovery straps.

"Everyone rigged," Billy III said. "We ran the two straps around the boat, one in front and one in back behind the big hole."

Jimmy winched the boat up out of the water and onto the boat ramp. Once the boat was pulled ashore Jimmy boomed up until the boat was suspended from both lines, and moved it into the parking lot where it was set on stands.

"It was put on stands so it could be dismantled and disposed of," Billy III said. "Due to the large hole in the hull and the keel, it was cut up to be junked."
