Jackknifed In Jersey

On October 12, Sisbarro Towing in Union, New Jersey, was called by the state police to respond to Route 24 for a jackknifed tractor-trailer.

"Upon arrival, I found the tractor facing west in the median and the trailer across two lanes," said Patrick Sisbarro. He responded with his 2017 Kenworth T-800 with a 2017 NRC 40/50 CSR 50-ton sliding rotator.

The trailer had smashed into the tractor when it spun and ripped open the fuel tank. The tank was actively leaking and Union County Hazmat was requested to the scene for the spill.

"It was requested we pump off the remaining fuel and apply Speedy Dry to the roadway," Sisbarro said. "We stopped the transfer from the passenger tank to the driver's tank and then pumped off the remaining fuel."

He dispatched operator Frank Santangelo in their service truck, a 2005 Ford F-550 with a custom Knapheide utility body. Operator Will Woytowicz was dispatched in their support truck, a 1993 Ford F-350 with a Reading body and auto crane, with a pallet of abosrbents.

"Our 2016 Ford F-650 with a Jerr-Dan 21-foot flatbed was in the area operated by Rich Lopes. He was also dispatched for manpower," Sisbarro said. "We applied a layer of Speedy Dry to the road and swept it into the road. While the guys were doing that I began winching the truck and trailer back onto the roadway with the NRC."

The trailer was disconnected and hooked to Sisbarro's 2004 Freightliner Columbia Detroit tractor operated by Adam Masiello. The DOT and N.J. State Police stopped traffic and Adam turned the trailer around within the roadway. The tractor had to be rear-towed due to its position as well as its damaged rear tires.

"The Speedy Dry was swept to the side of the road to wait for a DEP cleanup contractor to clean the remainder of the fuel in the median," stated Pat. "We applied a new layer of Speedy Dry to finish absorbing in the roadway. The tractor and trailer were towed directly to the customer."
