Be Proud of What You Do

As a technical writer for American Towman and the towing and recovery industry, I get on the Internet daily to research tow truck activity around the world to see what's happening in the wacky world of towing.

Towing and recovery professionals are rough-and-tumble personalities that, as a whole, are God-fearing, law-abiding citizens operating their businesses within the letter of the law.

However, for those few tow companies not doing what's right, the media takes license to beat us up. As the saying goes, "When I do something right, no one remembers; when I do something wrong, no one forgets."

They'll make the industry look as though we're all "a bunch of yahoos" out to steal cars, gouge the motoring public and get rich by deceit. It only takes one media report to blow things beyond proportion.

That's not the case. Perhaps a small pep talk is in order.

Living the Flip Side

We're lucky to have a flip side of daily news reporting about tow companies and the services they provide, especially as it regards Mother Nature. With much of America locked in harsh weather conditions, I'm seeing higher than usual reporting of tow truck operators doing great things to help keep motorists rolling.

Here's the way I see it: If you're a professional, law-abiding tow company owner operating within the guidelines of the law, you and your team are providing an incredible and necessary service to your community's motorists. Imagine a world without tow trucks and the services you provide. The world would come to a complete stop ... and there would be total chaos.

Parking lots would jam. Highways would turn into parking lots. People couldn't commute to work. Simple tasks like going to the grocery store or picking up kids from school wouldn't happen without highways and city streets free from disabled and wrecked vehicles.

While news reports are lined with wrongful actions of a few dishonest and unscrupulous towers, for the rest of us, know this: you're all heroes for what you do. There's no comparing your actions to other vocations. Few others brave howling winds, driving rain and extreme cold to serve. When someone spins out on a slippery, ice-covered roadway or if a motorist gets distracted and crashes into another motorist, they most likely will need a tow truck to get them to a shop or home.

If a motorist is DUI, parks illegally and violates the law or appropriate signage, it's not the towers fault that their vehicles are towed or impounded. We're only providing the service.

So, when I read mostly bad press involving tow truck incidents, I realize that bad press comes with the territory. It's no different than some rogue cop working outside his agency's guidelines or the law. But when you're thinking professional, you act professional. I believe in the industry's varsity players and support you proudly and wholeheartedly.

It's too bad that the acts of an unscrupulous few tarnish all of your good work, but I believe in the good you do. I believe in you being there to help at times when help is needed most. Towers put their lives on the line each and every day to help complete strangers. It's in our hearts; it's who we are. To me, that's an honorable mission we strive to provide.
