Budget Passes with APTO Amendment

The Ohio House of Representatives passed the state Transportation Budget which included an amendment sponsored by the Association of Professional Towers-Ohio on March 7. The amendment makes the extended size and weight limit exemption for heavy-duty towing and recovery vehicles permanent in law.

It also expands the current size and weight limits for towing and recovery vehicles responding to an emergency, allowing heavy-duty wreckers to operate without the threat of penalty for exceeding weight limitations when traveling to and returning from an emergency.

APTO Executive Director Joe Hollabaugh testified in front of the Ohio House Finance Committee in support of the amendment on behalf of the state's towing industry. A part of this testimony included video of a History Channel broadcast of "Rescue Trucks" that featured APTO Member Ron Myers of Pine Tree Towing and Recovery and a real-life emergency.

"We showed this video to the committee to demonstrate the capabilities of heavy-duty towing and recovery vehicles, the need for the exemption, how they are used and why heavy duty towing and recovery vehicles are used in an emergency," the association stated in a release.
